Today, there are more than 400,000 car sharing users in Europe. Especially in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and in the UK (London) car sharing is very well developed. However, there are still many cities in Europe that do not (yet) possess any professional car sharing service.

Car sharing has a number of very positive impacts on the urban environment and on travel behaviour:

  • car sharing vehicles replace four to ten private cars
  • car sharing makes it possible to choose the most adequate vehicle for your trip
  • the pay-as-you-drive principle makes you more aware of the costs of an individual trip
  • the modal shift leads to a significant reduction of transport related CO2 emissions

This report is a summary of the development of car sharing in Europe as at the start of the EU project momo Car sharing.

Insights in car sharing in the brochure of momo.

I notice that Norway is not among the 14 countries studied. In Norway the Bilkollektivet BA has around 2000 members and is the largest carsharing organization in Scandinavia. The Institute of Transport Economics has recently in report 1156/2011 looked into the potential for carsharing in the Oslo-region. Information from the members of Bilkollektivet has been a source of information. The report has an English summary see http://www.toi.no/getfile.php/Publikasjoner/T%D8I%20rapporter/2011/1156-2011/1156-2011-elektronisk.pdf
