Crossing the street has become more dangerous in European cities. One out of six pedestrian crossings scored an unsatisfactory mark. In 2008 this was one out of eight. This is shown by the investigation in 31 European cities done by the ANWB (Dutch association for travel, transport and AA patrol) and its European partners.
More than 60 per cent of all examined pedestrian crossings were assessed positive. Rotterdam scored best. All ten examined pedestrian crossings in Rotterdam scored well. Who wants to cross the street most safely, should go to the Slovak city Bratislava. This is the safest place to cross the street. The exit of the popular park Palestro in Milan finished last. The researchers were surprised there by a car driver who parked his car exactly on the pedestrian crossing.
The research showed that rules of pedestrian crossings differ per country. In Italy a pedestrian has right of way when he is on pedestrian crossing. While in the Netherlands the pedestrian has right of way when he indicates he wants to cross the street. The ANWB and its partners European guidelines.
