The Austrian Post produces 100,000 tons of CO2 every year. As an important step towards an eco-friendly delivery service, a substantial part of the fleet will be substituted with electric vehicles.
The 10,000 employees of the Austrian Post cover a distance of almost 227,000 kilometres every day. That is half the distance from earth to the moon. About 9,000 vehicles are needed for this logistic effort that consumes about 15 million litres of fuel a year, causing 100,000 tons of CO2 emissions. To become more eco-friendly the postal service plans to change the fleet from conventional vehicles to electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are very well suited for the delivery service demands. They can easily manage short stop and go trips, especially in dense city centres, and can be charged during the night.
By the end of 2011, 256 electric vehicles should be in service. About 1,000 electric vehicles should be in use to deliver mail and parcels to customers without CO2 emissions by 2014. The Austrian Post wants to do even more than this. It aims to ensure that all mail and parcels are delivered without producing any CO2 emissions. To reach this ambitious goal, it participates in national and international carbon offsetting schemes.
