Stockholm is facing 4 to 5 years of traffic chaos for both public transport and private mobility. Due to urban sprawl, a large-scale restructuring of the commuter train and metro system is needed. Increasing urban sprawl is a pattern seen in most modern cities. While the city grows in area, the coverage and condition of public transport needs to improve accordingly. Stockholm is one of the fastest growing cities and as a consequence faces a 4-5 year period of public transport renovation, mostly of the commuter railways. One of the changes will be to the signaling system for the red line to allow for more frequent and punctual routes. This will certainly cause delays and congestion at peak times of the day. Jesper Petterson from the Stockholm Local Traffic Agency calls for the citizens’ patience in the upcoming years.

Last year Stockholm grew by 40,000 inhabitants, adding to the need for large-scale restructuring of infrastructure. The city will build an underground railroad for the commuter train. The districts of Stockholm City and Solna are going to be connected to other parts of the city and old metro lines will be going through signal and track renovation. However, the expansion of Stockholm is faster than the renovation process. Mats Freij from the Stockholm Traffic Office describes the situation as 'growing pains' of the city.
