Only travelling with a chip card in NL

From November 3, 2011, travellers in the Netherlands may only use the Public Transport (PT) chip card for travelling by bus, subway or tram and no longer use the (paper) strip card. The national government has given permission to abolish the PT strip card in the remaining six regions in the Netherlands.

 

 

Local governments that are authorized to do so, are the province of Noord-Brabant, Utrecht, Groningen, Drenthe, the region Utrecht, the Eindhoven Regional Government. In the rest of the Netherlands, the transition from PT strip card to single smart card use was already made in the previous years/months. A review revealed that the last six transportation regions met the criteria in which the interest of the traveller comes first. For the train was an exemption made. The transition period is a little longer. It’s expected that the paper ticket will by abolished by the end of 2012. See also
