Over 50 velomobile riders from Europe, the United States and Canada will cross the United States coast to coast in a tour that has never been attempted before. This tour, called “Roll over America” or ROAM, will be so unique that its participants will find it virtually impossible to escape public attention. It's organised from 28 July- 26 August.
The true secret of the tour is technology. Instead of standard trekking or road bicycles the participants are riding velomobiles. A velomobile essentially is a three-wheeled recumbent built into an aerodynamic shell made of fiberglass, carbon fiber or aluminum and designed for every-day use on roads. Painted in bright colors, the velomobiles on “Roll over America” look like little rocket cars, much lower than a standard bicycle. Visibility and respect on roads are high, riders report, though some caution is needed when cruising in urban traffic.
Beginning July 28 at Portland, OR, “Roll over America” will pass through 15 states on its northerly route before arriving at Washington D.C. on August 24, crossing Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Rest stops and overnight locations will be used to meet and exchange with the public. Information about the route, its riders and the tour’s mission are to be found online at www.rolloveramerica.eu.
