When people move, they typically have to reorganise their mobility patterns, and is thus a good time to switch to more sustainable travel modes. The German cycling club ADFC aims to capitalise on this knowledge by arranging new citizen tours (You have moved? Get on the saddle now) that allows “movers” to get to know their new city, and cycle routes that can be used for everyday travel.

ADFC offer a range of citizen tours, including; the cities cycle routes and shortcuts, historical city, culinary, and leisure tours. In some cities, the tours are accompanied by the mayor or are carried out in co-operation with city guides. Experience exchange and information are always at the core of the tours, to allow participants to find answers to questions such as: Where can I park my bike? Can I take it on-board a bus or train? What is the safest route to school? Where is the most beautiful lake for bathing?

All tours are planned in a way to allow less experienced cyclists to participate as well. They last about 2 to 3 hours, and there are many rests on-route, and the tour ends with a “snack stop”. This year, the new citizen tours are offered in 38 German small and large cities, including Aachen, Berlin, Bonn, Frankfurt (Main), and Stuttgart.
