Since June 2010 the transport company of Kassel in Germany (Kasseler Verkehrs-Gesellschaft or KVG) has provided CO2 neutral transport services on all its 73 buses, as well as those owned and run by subcontractors.
To make its services CO2 neutral, the company offsets all vehicle related CO2 emissions by investment in UN-certified climate protection projects in Brasil and China. The projects funded are related to the use of bio-fuels in Brazil and to the changeover from coal to natural gas in China. Both projects combine certified CO2 reductions with positive economic and social effects. As a bonus, all trams in the city are powered by electricity from Scandinavian hydropower . Using this combined package, Kassel is the first city in Germany to provide CO2 neutral public transport.
The total fleet comprises about 500 vehicles covering a range of different vehicles including buses, trams and lorries for construction materials, as well as dispatcher and service vehicles. Annually this fleet covers about six million kilometres resulting in CO2 emissions of approximately nine million tonnes.
